The federal government’s instant asset write off is a scheme where eligible businesses can claim an immediate deduction for the business portion of the cost of an asset.

It can be used for multiple assets, both new and second hand. But the best part is that it can be used for the install a commercial solar system!

Complete eligibility rules and regulations can be found here

So, with businesses able to use this scheme on commercial solar it begs the question, is it still worth it?

Is it still worth it to get commercial solar?

With increasing prices to labor, materials and shipping, businesses are looking at new ways to cut costs. Depending on the structure of a company and what they do, electricity can be a huge expenditure that is just seen as a necessary cost of running a business.

Installing a commercial system is a no-brainer. Not only for companies looking to cut costs, but also from an environmental standpoint. The volatility in the price of electricity impacts the grid’s big users more – i.e. businesses without solar.

Finn Peacock, founder of respected industry information site SolarQuotes.com.au, says “Unlike households, which tend to use more energy before 9am and after 5pm, most businesses operate (and therefore use the vast majority of their electricity) between 9am-5pm. This makes Australian commercial enterprises an ideal fit for solar systems.”

They have a complete guide to commercial solar you can use as a starting point here.

If you’ve done your research and decided solar is the right move for your business, but not sure what separates installers, we have come up with a simple checklist so you know what to look for.

What is a good checklist when looking for a solar installer?

  1. Ensure your contractor holds a relevant industry accreditation and licences to perform electrical work. Ideally they offer a range of services, like air-conditioning and electrical upgrades so you’re always sure who to call.
  2. Has asked you for 30-minute interval data from your retailer and only indicates savings based on this information. This is only appropriate for systems over 40kW.
  3. Has credibility in the field with past case studies showcasing similar works.
  4. Has consulted you around necessary electrical & building engineering requirements.
  5. Products quoted have a strong base within Australia. This is important for warranties to give you peace of mind in the event of a product fault.
  6. Product manufacturers are diversified and don’t just produce solar panels. In a decade’s time when government rebates are exhausted, will they still be around for warranty claims?
  7. Does your contractor have experience with solar batteries and EV Chargers? While this may be a conversation down the road, it is important to consider when it comes to demand management.
  8. What after install servicing options does your contractor provide?

Choosing the right electrical contractor for your solar installation is crucial. It can be the difference between saving on your electricity for decades to come or getting a potentially dangerous install that costs your business in the long-run.
